about

I grew up listening to film soundtracks by John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and others (guess my age) and long dreamed of making one of my own. I’ve worked in adjacent areas (art exhibitions, for example, and the 2023 dance piece Bárbaros) but this year the opportunity came to explore that creative space more fully thanks to Tom Young’s “100 Day Film” challenge, which resulted in the November launch of the non-linear feature Lucid Dreaming.

Tom’s a colleague at Flinders University. We’d worked together previously on a short film, and I leapt at the chance to volunteer to help with the music with this project. What ended up in the finished film is a mix of material that already existed; tracks written especially for the film, some of them re-edited or reconceived; and early drafts from another work-in-progress. Due to time constraints, the composition and editing processes were challenging, but Tom and I did our best. You can watch the finished film on my website and YouTube.

This album comprises the tracks I wrote for Tom during the development of the original score. The track titles don’t necessarily reflect the moments in the film for which they were created: they’re just as often named after the moods they evoke, drawing on the imagery and language of dreams. Not all of them appeared in the film in this form, or even at all: now I understand why some of my favourite soundtrack moments never made it to the screen! (I have no doubt that in turn some of these textures will migrate into future works, one way or another.) Still, I think the collection of tracks works as an album in its own right, worthy of an independent release. There’s a journey here that I enjoyed creating, and continue to enjoy now, on repeat, as I write this.

I hope you find Lucid Dreaming stimulating, evocative, and occasionally playful, like the dreams that inspired it.

about

theadelaidean Adelaide, Australia

Original and collaborative ambient soundscapes.

My albums with Projekt Records and Aerozine 50 are very much in the drone/lofi vein, without the weird surprises you might find here.

By day I'm a writer and educator at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia.
