about

Rapid rhythms and changeable chords . . .

Expectation-defying progressions with unpredictable resolutions . . .

KINESIS is the result of an extended period of experimentation with different methods and textures - drawing on artists and styles as diverse as Frank Zappa and the Berlin School - all in service of movement.

My goal with this collection is to produce structures that avoid repetition (mostly) for their meditative effect. Structures that are kinetic instead of static, while remaining true to their ambient roots. They can exist wholly and yet dynamically in the background while at the same time rewarding deeper "reading" for melodic/harmonic features that pass as quickly as they arise - pareidolia for the ears, if you will. The sense of recognition you experience when you encounter something new that you instinctively understand, whether it recurs or not.

This restlessness culminates in its opposite, the looping "Kinesis 1", which is a nod to a different kind of electronic ambience: still mobile, but with a thread of stillness tugging through its centre. The line of dialogue, by the way, that appears towards the end of this track comes from the novel Gods of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, read by J D Weber, available from LibriVox.

The bonus track that comes with this release is not available elsewhere, at present. In a dark ambient vein (down the Vangelis end of the spectrum) it too eschews melodic and harmonic loops, but it finds its familiar groove early and sticks to it.

Sections of this album were composed at Oratunga Station in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

Enjoy.

theadelaidean Adelaide, Australia

Original and collaborative ambient soundscapes.

My albums with Projekt Records and Aerozine 50 are very much in the drone/lofi vein, without the weird surprises you might find here.

By day I'm a writer and educator at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia.
